Nervosa — ’Perpetual Chaos’ Review

Nervosa is a Death/Thrash Metal band from Brazil founded by Prika Amaral in 2010. The band has had many line-up changes over the years but the most noticeable was without a doubt the departure of the singer and bass player Fernanda Lira and the drummer Luana Dametto. After their departure three members joined the band: Rocío “Diva Satanica” Vázquez (Vocals), Mia Wallace (Bass) and Eleni Nota (drums). This is the first time ever that Nervosa is a four-piece band instead of a three-piece band. As a huge fan before the current line-up I was devastated by the news of Fernanda Lira and Luana Dametto’s departure since both of them are big influences and idols to me personally. I guess this review will kind of be about if they succeeded in replacing them or not.

The album cover is pretty damn cool with the white Nervosa logo, a dark blue background, red color that looks like blood and a big grim reaper holding a scythe. The grim reaper itself feels kind of a little bit generic to me and makes me think of Children of Bodom right away. However, I do believe that it is a good album cover and they make it work. The Telephone lines and building in the background is a nice touch as well.

BEWARE: Below are my opinions. Remember that opinions and music taste differ. So I would like to urge you as a reader not to judge an album based solely on what I write. See this review more as an introduction to you instead of something definitive.

First of all I would like to say that I really appreciate the different sound of the songs on this album. Some of the songs are a little slower but has more focus on the kind of heavier side of Metal, while others are faster and total bangers. ‘Perpetual Chaos’ is a good album in my opinion and it does really give you the killer Death/Thrash it is marketing itself as. The new line-up did an amazing job on this album and I am quite happy with Fernanda and Luana’s replacements, and considering what an enormous fan I am of those two musicians that is a very good job.

However, while I do like this album and would love to hear it again very soon I do have some negative comments. To me ‘Perpetual Chaos’ is kind of like a “Downfall of Mankind v.2”, not to say that I don’t like that album (I fucking love Downfall of Mankind) I did expect something else from “Perpetual Chaos”. The thing is, “Victim of Yourself” was a brilliant Thrash album that had a kind of personal touch to it. The next album “Agony” had generally a little darker and heavier tone to it. On “Downfall of Mankind” I believe that Nervosa had really developed their Deathened Thrash sound.

What I am trying to say here is that the difference in sound between the last two records is less than the others. This could however be a sign that Nervosa has discovered their sound and wants to continue on it, but I felt that the result of this was that “Perpetual Chaos” became a little predictable. You kind of knew what you where in for after the first few songs. “Agony” did this brilliantly though by completely shock me with the song “Wayfarer”. That song didn’t sound like the other ones at all and definitely showed a different side of Fernanda’s amazing vocals.

Another thing that I noticed on “Perpetual Chaos” is the fact that none of the songs are in Portuguese. “Victim of Yourself” had “ Urânio Em Nós”, “Agony” had “Guerra Santa” and “Downfall of Mankind” had “Cultura do Estupro”. But “Perpetual Chaos” didn’t have any. The reason to this could be because Nervosa isn’t an all Brazilian band anymore. Diva is from Spain, Wallace is from Italy and Nota is from Greece. Since Diva Satanica is from Spain I am not sure if she can speak Portuguese or not, and if she can’t it wouldn’t make much sense to singsongs in Portuguese would it.

VERDICT OVERVIEW:
A LIST DESCRIBING WHAT THE DIFFERENT VERDICTS MEAN.

1: extremely bad, stay as far away from this album as you can
2: Wow this really sucked
3: this is bad but has some decent things in it
4: Not impressed but its not that bad
5: 50–50 not that good but not bad, its listenable
6: this is good
7: This is really good
8: wow this is great
9: This is awesome! You should definitely check this album out!
10: MASTERPIECE!!! I have absolutely no complaints at all.

The verdict that i will give ’Perpetual Chaos’ is:

8/10
